7 Days Marangu Route

OVERVIEW

The 7-Day Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only route on Kilimanjaro with hut accommodations instead of tents, making it a popular choice for climbers seeking extra comfort and shelter. This route offers a gentler ascent, passing through lush rainforests, open moorlands, and alpine deserts before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The 7-day option includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, significantly improving summit success rates. While it’s considered one of the easier routes in terms of trail gradient, the rapid ascent profile still presents a challenge. It’s ideal for climbers looking for a less rugged, more structured trekking experience with a chance to reach the roof of Africa.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Your trek begins at Marangu Gate, where you complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. Hike through lush montane rainforest, spotting blue monkeys and exotic birds along the way. After about 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, where you’ll stay overnight in shared dorm-style accommodations.

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

The trail continues through heath and moorland zones, offering open views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The vegetation changes noticeably as you gain altitude. After 5–7 hours of hiking, you reach Horombo Hut, your base for the next two nights. Enjoy the views and rest up.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This important acclimatization day includes a short hike to Zebra Rocks (about 4,000m) and back, helping your body adjust to the increasing altitude. You’ll return to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest. This day significantly increases your chance of summit success.

Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Today you ascend steadily through alpine desert to reach Kibo Hut, the base for your summit attempt. The hike takes about 5–6 hours and is less steep but more exposed. After an early dinner, you’ll rest and prepare for the midnight push to the summit.

Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut

Begin your summit attempt around midnight, ascending via Gillman’s Point (5,685m) to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Expect a cold, steep climb in the dark, with the reward of a sunrise over the glaciers if you summit early. After celebrating and taking photos, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. Total trekking time: 12–16 hours.

Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate

Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, where you’ll sign out and receive your climbing certificate. Your driver will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and well-deserved rest.

Day 7: Departure / Optional Extension

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and depending on your schedule, transfer to the airport or begin a safari or Zanzibar beach extension. Many climbers take this day to rest, explore local culture, or reflect on their successful Kilimanjaro adventure.
