Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)
Your adventure begins with a transfer to Machame Gate, where you’ll complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trek starts through lush rainforest, often misty and rich with vegetation. After about 5–7 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Machame Camp, your first overnight stop.
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)
Today’s hike takes you out of the forest and into the moorland zone, with amazing views and a noticeable drop in temperature. The trail is steep but rewarding. You’ll arrive at Shira Camp after about 4–6 hours of trekking, situated on a plateau with views of Mount Meru and the Shira Ridge.
Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (a good altitude challenge), then descend to Barranco Camp. The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude. The hike takes 6–8 hours and ends with great views of the Barranco Wall.
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
The day starts with a climb up the dramatic Barranco Wall – a short but steep scramble with incredible views. Then it’s a more gentle hike across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, your base for the night. It’s a shorter day (4–5 hours), allowing rest and acclimatization.
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
After breakfast, continue the steady uphill climb to Barafu Camp, the final base before your summit attempt. You’ll arrive by mid-afternoon, giving you time to rest and prepare. Dinner is early, as you’ll be waking up around midnight for your summit push. Total hiking time is about 3–4 hours.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Summit day! Begin your ascent around midnight, trekking through the cold and dark toward Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness a stunning sunrise at the summit. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Barafu, rest briefly, then continue to Mweka Camp for the night. Total time: 12–15 hours.
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Enjoy a final breakfast on the mountain before a 3–4 hour descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out and receiving your summit certificates, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha or Moshi to rest and celebrate your achievement.
